Through repetition and creative immersion activities, students’ expressions progress so that they develop proficiency with words and short phrases. Basic cultural concepts will be covered, including sushi making. Students will also learn to use the katakana and hiragana writing systems, as well as some basic kanji (Chinese characters). The Japanese curriculum articulates directly with Dixie College's new 2-year Japanese program.
Japanese II: Intermediate level students are distinguished from the novice level by their ability to create and express their own thoughts both in speaking and writing the Japanese language. Students will advance in grammar and vocabulary skills through physical response methods. Japanese history and culture will also be covered, and students will learn an additional 75-100 kanji. The Japanese curriculum articulates directly with Dixie College's new 2-year Japanese program. Students successfully completing this course should be well prepared to test out of the college's first-year Japanese courses if they so desire.
Japanese III: Level III students will learn to use the language in new contexts. They can expect to learn an additional 100 kanji and will pay special attention to incorporating them in their reading and writing.
